We have well stocked bird feeders and a house that has cat doors, an old foundation and eaves that breath. The seed attracts wild things other than birds, and sometimes they find their way into the house. The cats take care of this minor problem – it’s their job.
A couple of nights ago, I heard a scream in the night of some poor frightened animal and the scurrying of cats. I expected there to be a mouse head on the kitchen floor when I cam down for coffee. I rolled over and went back to sleep.
The next day Erica was working on the computer when a little nose pushed up from the side of the desk and a small furry thing with big eyes looked at her. I heard the screams and came to rescue her, but I found nothing. The cats, however were very interested in the desk area.
Later that afternoon, a flying squirrel ran out with cats in pursuit. I eventually rescued it and put it out on the bird feeder. I got a good picture. It is a Southern Flying Squirrel, according to the website FlyingSquirrels.com. He ate some seed and then “flew” off and ran into the old rose garden where he disappeared.
I hope he’s all right.
